Implant Placement

dental implant placementDental implant surgery is a process that replaces tooth roots with metal, screw-like posts to replace damaged or missing teeth with artificial teeth that look and function much like real ones. Additionally, this can be a welcome alternative to dentures or bridgework.

Implants are surgically drilled into your jawbone, where they serve as the roots of the missing teeth. The titanium in the implants fuses with your jawbone, ensuring the implants won’t slip, make noise or cause bone damage.

In general, implants may be necessary if there’s:

  • One or more missing teeth
  • A jawbone that reached full growth
  • An adequate bone to secure the implants or are able to accommodate a bone graft

Planning for implants involves an array of specialists, including a clinician who specializes in conditions of the mouth, face, and jaw; a dentist who specializes in the treatment of structures that support the teeth like gums and bones (periodontist), and a dentist who designs artificial teeth (prosthodontist).

Dental exam: 3D images may be taken to have models made of your teeth and jaw. Intimate your doctor about any medical conditions or any medications you take.

Treatment plan: To control pain, anesthesia is administered. You will be instructed about eating and drinking before surgery, depending on what type of anesthesia has been determined for you. If you’re going to get general anesthesia, get someone to take you home after surgery.
